The famed Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, known for his quest to implement movement to the form of his buildings and structures, is the designer for the new Mediopadana TAV Station. The rail line itself is a controversial high-velocity track that stretches 483 meters. With the station’s expected completion on June 9th, the platform will serve as a new portal to the town of Reggio Emilia, Italy.
In keeping with Santiago Calatrava’s signature white buildings, the structure for the Mediopadana Station is a large undulation form composed of 457 steel frames spaced about one meter apart.
The fame varies slightly so as to give the appearance of a fluid wave. Over top of the platform to provide protection from the elements, translucent glass panels are situated between the steel members. For added support, each of the ribs is partially supported by a curved longitudinal beam supported every 25 meters by a composite concrete and steel column.
